Ergasilus (Copepoda: Poicilostomatoida)

Collected: Upper Chesapeake Bay in Middle River using a 153 micrometer mesh plankton net, Surface tow. Summer 2004.

Notes: Males of this genus are planktonic. Females are parasitic and have modified large 2nd antennae with hooks used to attach to the gills of fishes, especially catfish. This specimen is likely Ergasilus versicolor. Other members of this genus infect killifishes in the Chesapeake.
