Porcelain crab zoea
Collected: 4 km offshore from Chincoteague, VA. Depths of 5-7 meter, April, 2006 using an epibenthic sled (365 micrometer mesh.
Notes: Porcelain crab zoeae are relatively common catches in spring and summer in these collections off of Assateague. Adults of several different genera occur along the mid-Atlantic Coast. The long spines supposedly provide protection from predation while these striking larvae are in the plankton.
The adult porcelain crab is often commensal. Some live in tubes with the large polychaete, Chaeptopterus.
