Pagurus longicarpus- Hermit crab zoea

Hermit Crab zoea (Pagurus longicarpus) The red color is due to staining with Rose Bengal.

Location: 1 km off of the beach at Assateague, VA near the bottom in 10 m depths (epibenthic sled), Summer 2005

Notes: This larval hermit crab is a zoea of Pagurus longicarpus. Note the 2 spines on the back of the elevated carapace

These larvae are common throughout the summer at this Assateague location.


ID Note: Pagurus has an unusually long rostrum
