Anchovy (Anchoa sp.)
Location: Off the beach of Assateague, VA in 5m of water. June 2006.
Notes: Anchovies are among the most common fish larvae in the summer plankton. The two most common species are the bay anchovy (Anchoa mitchilli) and striped anchovy (Anchoa hepsetus) whose larvae are difficult to distinguish.
ID NOTES: The position of the anus relative to the dorsal and anal fins separates anchovies from other slender larvae.
