Seastar Brachiolaria larva

Seastar Brachiolaria larva

bipinnaria-brachiolaria?

LEFT. This is the first stage in sea star development, the bipinaria larva. Here it is beginning to transform into the brachiolaria stage.

Collected: 100m offshore from Assateague Island, VA. Depths of 7-9 meters. Caught using an epibenthic sled (365 micrometer mesh). June 2009.

Notes: These delicate larvae are uncommon, but were relatively abundant in this single collection. They are probably larvae of the common seastar Asterias.
