Themisto sp. (hyperiid amphipod)

Parathemisto ps1 big

Themisto sp.

Collected: Off of Assateague Island in July by William Johnson

Notes: Hyperiid amphipods are typical of open ocean waters and may be abundant at higher latitudes. Themisto are predators that feed on copepods, fish larvae,  and other zooplankton.

As is typical of hyperiid amphipods, they have a large compound eye, which does not show up well in this photo.
